Kept objects

I keep a younger version of me on the windowsill.

It's a white ceramic bird with a canary yellow beak and blue-tipped wings. I can still remember the day my hands burrowed through my kindergarten teacher's cloth birthday sack: my fingers combing through the wrapped gifts, searching for the perfect treasure. Somehow this tiny ornament has traveled with me for more than twenty years. It has dwelt in basement suburbia, perched in my South Vancouver loft and today sits on the window sill of my home office overlooking condo developments, hurried traffic and a stunning view of Washington's Mount Baker. It's my little reminder of the curious childhood me.
