The American Story

I just saw Gangs of New York, in which Scorcese reminds us that there’s more than one story when it comes to the history of America. Our public schools teach the one about noble-minded revolutionaries whose fight for freedom forged a new course for government and nationhood. Many evangelical Christians tell the story of God-fearing leaders who based this nation on Christian principles. Scorcese tells a mythological story of violent tribes fighting civil wars for their fathers and for the future of America.

There can certainly be many different stories, but which one(s) do you believe? On America’s Independence Day, what are you celebrating, as an American?
