Ouch. Yeah, I guess that isn’t so clear.

Though, since generally the pronoun reflects back to the closest possible antecedent, I’m going with truth on this one.

In fact, though, I’ve read a fair number of books where the author seemed to spend a great deal of time trying to find the lie, or the truth, or anything, and ultimately failed, it seems to me.
