I like the real true Christmas a lot. But, if you talk of the commercialism and the “ho ho ho” and shopping and Christmas sales spirit, then I would vote less than I used to. The commercialism of Christmas turns me into a grinchlike character.

I think this year’s best example of Christmas commercialism is the Bon commercial in which the sound design for the ad centers around a choral rendition of the Carol of the Bells, substituting the word “Bon” for each syllable that is being sung. Bon Bonbonbon Bon Bonbonbon Bon Bonbonbon . . .

Ahh.

I think I enjoy Christmas more than I used to mostly because I have kids now. It is so exciting to see the innocence in their eyes and be able to teach them the truth of Christmas so they are able to grow up knowing it is not about the commercialism that goes on around us. It is more in the giving of truth than in the giving of toys and physical gifts. Yesterday, my children and I read the story of Mary and Joseph as they trecked to Bethlehem and the birth of Jesus, and while my boys are still quite young, I could see the excitement and wonder of it all and knew that as the years progress my wife and I will be able to keep them focused on what this celebration is really about.

I get worried about Christmas more often now that I have a son. He’s not two yet and, though I’m sure he understands more than we realize, it seems that the only excitement in him is ripping paper off of presents. That and music. Music redeems all.
For the first time in my life, primarily because of my son, I realize how greedy I am. I and my wife have sooo much and my son has more toys than any of us can handle, and yet it seems that we “rake in the goods” every year. I don’t want that anymore. I asked my parents to take whatever they were going to spend on Alex and give at least 25% to charities. Not even close to enough. Next year will have to be different.
Merry Christmas all

i found information on an interesting movement started by Bill McKibben called the Hundred Dollar Holiday. here’s a link to an article:

http://www.newdream.org/conversation-arc/msg02088.html

the biggest obstacle to rob and i spending only a hundred dollars for Christmas is gift exchanges in which there’s a designated amount you have to spend to get a gift for someone you don’t really even know so you end up getting them exactly what they put on the “master list” and because we’re getting a gift from someone who doesn’t really know us, we end up getting $40 worth of something we could have bought (or could have chosen NOT to buy) for ourselves in the first place if we weren’t already spending $40 to get a gift for someone we don’t really know…

i think i’m suffering from an overdose of stuff to the point i can’t even write manageable sentences anymore.

Incarnation of the Creator of the Universe in the form of a tiny child — whoo hoo!

More stuff — yuck.
