it is hilarious how we use language. many of us in alberta and bc call ontario-ites ‘easterners.’ but recently, i got almost yelled at by someone who said i don’t get canadian geography.
to ontario, there are others that are easterners. and ontario is the ‘centre.’
i wonder if it’s that fact that has helped shaped the social conciousness of ontario-ites into that ‘centre of the universe’ thing you speak of.
off-hand, are you from the USA? canadians tend to spell centre with ‘re’ instead of ‘er’.
that reminds me of a funny moment at my alma matter – dordt college. one parents day weekend, the college had tried to raise money selling bumper stickers, and they wrote:
dordt college
sioux centre
51250
at the time, as a US guy, the ‘re’ shocked me.
now i am simply in shock by the awesomeness of that zip code. don’t know why, but it’s really stuck with me.
