I think “agenda gift givers” can be spotted a mile away. So when the unexpected occurs – i.e. no agenda attached to the gift – people are pleasantly surprised and probably more willing to take the giver more seriously because the giver has shown that they respect differences of taste and opinion, mainly the recipient’s.
Giving gifts can involve financial AND ideological sacrifices.
