The comic genius of Will Ferrell

Just saw Old School at the Brew and View. Granted, the audience there is very generous, but it was probably the most and most consistently I’ve ever laughed in a movie. Will Ferrell has really perfected his craft. The Godfatheresque funeral scene where “Frank the Tank’s” wife says she’s going to divorce him is brilliant. I’m referring to the painfully sad, yet equally funny “Keep on truckin’” and “Good Stuff” deliveries. And I’m glad Ferrell’s leaving Saturday Night Live has allowed him to further perfect his body humor, now expanding to include nakedness as a very very effective comedic tool. It’s only a matter of time before Paul Thomas Anderson (or someone else equally important) casts him in roles that can display his amazing talent.

I am glad you, too, got something out of Old School. The only difference for me was that all I got was a sickening lump in the pit of my stomache and a strong desire to get up and walk out. Unfortunately, due to the fact that I was at work, I couldn’t.

OK. I just saw Elf this past week, and I can see Ferrell’s humor much more clearly now.

I’ll defend Old School as a farcical jab at our society’s unhealthy obsession with youth culture. I assume that lump in the pit of your stomach started during the bowling balls fraternity initiation scene.

I’m glad to hear about Elf. I laughed for at least two full minutes when I saw the poster for it several months ago.
