The new pope doesn’t like rock’n’roll. He’s called it “an instrument of the devil”. Should I be concerned about the “universal” church’s new father? How much does a person’s taste in music say about what kind of leader they might be? George Bush, for example, does not seem to choose very good artists for his gala events. Didn’t Britney Spears perform at the Republican convention last year?

Typically, I don’t trust entertainers’ views on politics because it just isn’t their field. Should I make the same distinction with politicians and world leaders? They might know politics or theology, but maybe they just should stay out of music criticism. Or can we make inferences about the character of a person by their taste in music, movies etc. I do it all the time with people I meet. And it is often a pretty accurate indicator of a person’s theology or politics.

Should I be concerned about the new pope if he doesn’t put on a pair of Bono’s sunglasses?
