Hey everybody—

Just wondering if anyone has seen it. I haven’t seen it yet, but I may. It generated some decent buzz; was it deserved or not?

i liked it a lot actually. it’s very beautifully done. parts of it have the feeling of a painting. not sure how they did that. you get a pretty good sense of what it might have been like to be a lower-class woman in 17th century Holland. particularly how scarlett johansson’s character is objectified, not just in the painting but particularly by older, richer men. yet she somehow keeps her dignity, as many women do in such circumstances. as always, johansson is totally amazing and that scratchy voice of hers is to die for!

Scarlett Johansson actually directed my attention to the film. Well, not personally, of course. I enjoyed her performances in Lost in Translation and Ghost World, and just wanted to know if I’d be disappointed.
