I’m getting overwhelmed with all the great movies coming out these days! Downfall (Der Untergang) is a film about the last days of the elite of Nazi Germany. You get to know Hitler and those around him as the Russians get closer and closer. A perfect war movie. The film shows the absurdity and evil of war, the stupidity and horror of the Nazi worldview, the fragility of absolute power, the fanatical loyalty and orderliness of German military personel to the very end, and the mix of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ people within Nazi leadership. The best thing about the film is that it makes you realize that horrible as National Socialism was, the people involved were just people. And finally, Bruno Ganz’s performance as Hitler is amazing—he has mastered Hitler’s strange bombastic way of speaking as well as his gestures and presence. Has anybody else seen this film?
