I’ve got a student looking for a book for her quarterly book report. She’s read everything by Jenkins and LeHaye and enjoys the style more than the content (thankfully). Her mother won’t allow her to read Tolkien. She doesn’t care for space-type books (I was thinking Out of the Silent Planet).
Any ideas?

What about "A Canticle for Liebowitz" by Walter Miller? It’s futuristic but set on earth, mind you a post-apocolyptic earth so it might as well be in space.

And what about Brave New World and 1984 and Fahrenheit 451, all futuristic novels set on earth with much more believable plotlines than LaHaye and Jenkins.

A Canticle for Liebowitz sounds pretty cool Dan. I may have to read that one myself. I guess I didn’t really think about the other distopia novels, thinking that I’d like to match her with something that had some pretty obvious spiritual themes. Then again, A Brave New World certainly fits that bill.
I’ll start with those and see what I can do. Thanks.

I also thought about "Dream Thief" by Stephen Lawhead which I thought was pretty cool when I was in Junior High, but I don’t know if I trust my Junior High self… Lawhead is some sort of Christian and I think the book has spiritual themes. Downside: I think there is a space station.

hey, write this same question to Byron at Hearts and Minds— or better yet, call the store. You will find a helpful person with twenty to thirty titles in mind. That’s what they do, and they are amazing at their work.
