Dark Places
was created as an installation piece for Matt?s senior art project at Illiana Christian High School. It is essentially a many-tentacled monster, which was allowed to grow and fester, unnoticed, in a place of hiding right under his classmates? noses. Located in a dark and already claustrophobic storage area right next to the art room, this mixed-media work was constructed using a variety of unconventional materials, including copper tubing, foam rubber, sheet metal, fabric, gravel, rope lights, and a smoke machine. The following is a direct quote from Matt’s artist’s statement: “Every one has some monstrosity overshadowing their lives. Most of the time, no one ever hears about their good friends’ problems until the whole deal spills out into the light. And by that time, those who are witness to the social destruction that ensues are shocked. I wished to show that. The problems that commonly involve the kids of today are certainly nothing easily escaped. These problems have many arms that penetrate deeply into even unknown areas of their lives. Escaping from those arms that reach out to trip up and entangle is not as easy as it may seem.”
