I’ve recently been falling in love (again) with song writers, thanks in part to some of the posts recently. I thought I would take a more direct approach in finding new stuff. Who have been some song writers (not necessarily lyricists) who have had success in writing stories? I suppose this could go cross genre to visual arts and theater, but because I find music a bit more easily accessible I’d like to discover more in this arena first.
I like Tom Waits and Leo Kottke in particular. The music behind and often in front of the lyrics seems to have/be a character unto itself. Obviously there’s Dylan and Simon. Are there any other lesser known possibly underground artists anybody could recommend?

Lopez! good to hear from you.

After reading ryan’s suggestion a little while back, I did go out and grab “Pink Moon” and like it a lot. But reading your post now, I’m glad I picked that one. It was just sort of a random grab from the three they had at the music store. Divine providence maybe.

I don’t know much about ‘train-a-comin’. Is that a really early album? Is that his bluegrassy stuff? I know he did an album with the del mccoury band, is that the one?

jonnerdude!

divine providence indeed. that orchestration may have cost you your life! i barely made it away with my sanity and even now it still haunts me.

as for the earle, i don’t know too much about it (except that it’s sweet) due to the fact that all i have is a burned copy my mom made for me.

it sounds to me like it’s not all that old. maybe early 90’s at the earliest. it is quite bluegrassy, but has great energy and just a bit of cynicism behind the honest music.
